Dec. 31, 2023 (World News Trust) -- Zambia on Sunday reported 189 new cholera cases and eight deaths in a single day, mainly in Lusaka, the capital city.
The waterborne disease of cholera has been affecting Zambia since October 2017, with sporadic outbreaks occurring in different parts of the country.
The Ministry of Health and its partners have been implementing various measures to contain the outbreak, such as improving the water supply and quality, administering oral cholera vaccine, conducting health education and surveillance, and providing case management and laboratory testing.
However, the heavy rainfall and flooding have posed challenges to the outbreak control efforts, as they facilitate the transmission of the bacteria through contaminated water and food.
Cholera is a serious threat to the lives of children and their families, especially in hard-to-reach areas with poor sanitation and hygiene conditions.
