May 31, 2012 (New American Dream) -- This week started with something called Memorial Day. It’s supposed to be a time of giving thanks for all the soldiers in all the wars that fought to keep our country free. There was a time I thought the USA actually was free…but we are not. We may never have been as free as we thought, but I’m pretty sure the governmental control was not so overt back when I was growing up. The president back then, despite having a gorgeous wife and model family, probably got a little on the side from Marilyn Monroe, but can you really blame him for that? But he stood up against the CIA and the rest of the Military-Prison-Industrial complex, even if he was a product of it. He tried to make a difference. So they shot him.
Today they’d probably find a way to impeach him over the Marilyn thing, or find someone who refuted his story of heroism on PT 109, or something. Or, maybe killing him would be the method of choice still. We certainly aren’t shy about killing people overseas with our drones, and we’re flying them around our own cities too.
Impeachment. That’s what Republicans do with Democratic presidents, isn’t it? Impeach them or try to find some reason they shouldn’t be eligible in the first place…right now they are trying to drum up that birth certificate b.s. again, to get rid of Obama. Not that Obama is any great prize, but geez, Romney and crew want to push us back to the dark ages, get rid of all the women’s rights stuff that we managed to push across in the sixties. It’s like, “you got to have a black president, and look where that got you! Let’s just junk all that civil rights stuff for women right now, we’ll see if we can get Jim Crow back next year.
On the other hand, they don’t bother with following the laws much; laws and truth are things to be broken and twisted if not just plain ignored. It’s the American way. So, for this Memorial Day—remember, I started out talking about Memorial Day?—this Memorial Day I didn’t mourn any soldiers. I mourned freedom, instead.
