Mar. 13, 2011 (World News Trust) -- Recent efforts by Republican politicians to eliminate federal funding of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting have focused on NPR’s supposed “liberal bias.” In fact, Republicans, as is so often the case, have mistaken the truth for liberal bias. To be fair and balanced to Republicans, the two are virtually indistinguishable to them.
Now, Republicans avoid the truth like the Wicked Witch of the West avoids water, so it stands to reason that the truth, like liberal bias, elicits fear and loathing in Republicans whenever they encounter it. Why, you might ask, do Republicans fear the truth? Simple. Republicans seek to justify pathological selfishness by institutionalizing it as a political philosophy. But, as we have established, the truth is just liberal bias by another name, and you can’t support the cornerstone of Republican philosophy with liberal bias, now can you?
Republicans try to legitimize their position with the Latin phrase, “Caveat Emptor,” which translates as “Let the Buyer Beware.” Let us parse this phrase. The word, “buyer” implies that there is a seller.
“Beware,” suggests that whatever product or service the seller is peddling is being misrepresented. In other words, the seller is lying.
Ah, but the seller is “Doing Business,” which, in his mind, means he’s protected by “Caveat Emptor,” so lying, cheating and stealing is perfectly alright, in fact, it’s the “American Way.” Just ask anyone on Wall Street.
So, if the truth is synonymous with liberal bias, and, as Republicans are so quick to point out, a liberal bias is downright un-American, then it follows that the truth must be un-American, too. Everything Republicans say and do certainly appears to support this thesis.
Finally, if Republicans are the sellers, then ordinary Americans must be the buyers. And if we accept “Caveat Emptor” as gospel -- and the Lord Rush Almighty says we damn well better -- then I guess we Americans had damn well better… beware.
